How to Enjoy Seafood in Da Nang, Vietnam

In Japan, there is one week of holidays at the beginning of May. We used the (only) chance this year to travel to Da Nang.

Working in Japan can be really hard, especially if you love traveling as much as I do. That’s why we decided to do a gap year from July 2018. The planning is almost done and I am super excited to finally start on our one year adventure.

If you feel like me and want to plan a gap year of travel then I have something for you:

It was our first trip visiting Vietnam, and we spent most of our time relaxing at the beach and eating delicious food. The best food experience we had was at Be Man, a restaurant for seafood in Da Nang, where the locals eat.

There are actually a lot of similar restaurants all over the city of Da Nang, open spaces with a lot of tables, a roof to keep the occasional rain of, a gigantic grill in the front and a kitchen in the back.

And most important, tanks with all kinds of seafood, a lot I had never seen before. Here is how it works and what made the experience so special:

How to Order Seafood in Da Nang at Be Man Restaurant

Upon arrival, you will be shown to a table (metal with plastic chairs). You get up and look at all the seafood they have in tanks and big buckets at the back. There is also a gigantic price list (in Vietnamese) with a list of all the seafood available and the kilo price.

You decide what kind of seafood you want to eat and how much, which is a little tricky if you have never done it before. I mean who knows how many grams of mussels you want to eat as a starter for two people?
We learned a good rule of thumb is to order about half a kilo (the shells weight a lot). Then you also tell them how you want your seafood to be prepared (steamed or barbecued etc.). If you don’t know what is good, they might also suggest something to you in their very broken English.

Enjoy the Seafood

We ordered 500g steamed clams, 300g grilled prawns, and 500g sautéed mussels. It was all very delicious. The table next to us tried to order rice, it took a long time until the waiters understood what they wanted, which makes me think the Vietnamese don’t eat rice with their seafood.
You can also order side dishes like nuts or fruits from people walking around the place offering it to you to buy directly.

The Vietnamese people have the custom of putting the shells etc. on the table or throw them under the same. A strange sight for us.

Be Man Restaurant Information

As mentioned before the name of the restaurant is Quan Be Man (Hải sản Bé Mặn). An added bonus, even though it doesn’t seem like it, you can pay for your seafood using a credit card.

If you are ever in Vietnam, you should definitely try a restaurant like that. Best of all of course, would be to try seafood in Da Nang at Be Man.

Try All the Vietnamese Food

I recommend you also try other foods in Vietnam, everything we tried was delicious. This time we were a little overcautious about street food (it is not worth it getting food poisoning if you only have one week of holidays per year). If we ever come back and have more time to be more adventurous we will definitely try everything, it all looked delicious!

You should try local foods everywhere you go in the world. If you ever happen to go to Nagoya in Japan you should definitely try some eel called Hitsumabushi. And the food in Taipei, Taiwans capital is so delicious we attended a food tour and kept on eating afterwards even though we were full to the bursting.
